The Style Funk
I started this blog to share the trials and tribulations of transitioning into a new decade of life in the hope that I am not the only one feeling these feels!
There has to be more to life than sweatpants.
I love my life but this weekend is the first time I felt a weird pang of discomfort with the prospect of getting older (disclaimer, I still have 7 weeks left until my birthday). What brought this on you might ask? Well, I went shopping.
It’s been a long time since I’ve enjoyed shopping but between living in the Cayman Islands (where there is only a handful of overpriced shops and people wear shorts and flipflops all the time) and life on the road, it wasn’t something I ever thought about. I’ve been rotating the same winter and summer clothes for the past 5 or 6 years and that was fine but something about 30 makes me want to level up and find my style again.
So back to yesterday, I bought two mini dresses in Pull & Bear. First mistake there. All I wanted was one or two dresses that I could throw on again and again, but feel and look good in. I’ve never factored my age into my dress choices before so when I tried on the dresses at home and realised I looked like I could be going to a teenage disco – I poured myself a tall glass of wine and text a friend saying something along the lines of please tell me I’m not the only one. She replied saying there has to be more to life than jeans and a black blazer, her equivalent of my sweatpants scenario.
This is not the first time of late that retail therapy has left me feeling the need for therapy. About a month ago I decided after another failed attempt to start working on my new wardrobe, that the only way to go all the way and actually buy something, was to avoid in-store fitting rooms at all costs. What is it with that damn lighting?
Before this, in February, I mistakenly went to purchase new runners during peak ovulation. I had to wait and go back two weeks later when the water retention and swelling had gone down.
Aging is a privilege but it can certainly be uncomfortable.
It is now my mission for 2023 to build a capsule wardrobe full of beautiful chic, sexy and sophisticated items. I want have fun and be creative with my style again, before it’s too late!
Who’s with me?
Inserting some of yesterdays try-ons below.
While the purple dress may look ok in a photo, it was the teenage disco dress I refer to. The second outfit was certainly more ‘adult’ and more expensive, but it still wasn’t ‘me’.
The search continues.
If you have had similar experiences please let me know and we can laugh and cry together! Leave a comment or email me at lifebyck@gmail.com.
As always, thanks for reading.
